Tuesday, December 15th, 2009
Fair Grove's Caleb Schaffitzel orally commits to play for Missouri State.

Fair Grove's Caleb Schaffitzel orally commits to play for Missouri State.

It’s official: Caleb Schaffitzel is going to play football at Missouri State.

According to the News-Leader and Fair Grove coach Jason O’Neal, Missouri’s all-time leading touchdown leader and all-time leading scorer has chosen to play for the Bears and will exclusively play defense.

Of course, RecSpecsOnline.com has been following Schaffitzel all season long, counting down to his breaking Missouri’s career TD mark. You can check out the final Caleb Schaffitzel Watch here.

Other local players that committed along with Schaffitzel were Hillcrest QB Mitchell Jenkins and Lebanon RB Josh Mattes.

All four players can make their decisions official during the signing period, which begins on Feb. 3.

RecSpecsOnline podcast with KSPR’s Mike Scott

Friday, November 13th, 2009

With a big weekend of high school football popping off tomorrow, who better than to bring in to talk about high school football than KSPR 33 personality Mike Scott?mike.scott.mug

When it comes to television coverage of high school sports, normally it’s very ordinary, but in his two years, Scott has turned KSPR 33 into the best HS football station in the area.

I tapped Scott to talk about this weekend’s football quarterfinal schedule. Right-click the link below to download the podcast to your desktop or click to stream it.

HS football rematches provide the wrong type of drama

Monday, November 9th, 2009

There’s a very short list of movies I like to watch more than once.team-america-photo

Godfather II
Scarface
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Hoosiers
The Usual Suspects
Fight Club
Team America

Other than that, I don’t really want to re-watch programming. Been there, done that. I know exactly what’s about to happen and I’d like to think I was perceptive enough to pick up most of what I needed the first time. What do the flicks above share? Memorable dialogue, unique points of view and brilliant acting (Where do you think Team America fits in? All three?)

But seriously, with movies and TV shows, I want something new. Give me a fresh, yet crappy Kevin Smith production or a cliched and severely overbaked vampire or zombie flick/TV show, rather than something I’ve already seen.

I feel the exact same way about high school football playoff games, which resume tonight. Ever since MSHSAA voters passed a measure two years ago to have two teams from each four-team district make the playoffs — which yes, does put HALF of the state’s football teams into the postseason — it has done nothing but set teams up to fail.

Webb City suspends three players for tonight’s playoff game

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

If you haven’t heard, Webb City High School has suspended three of its football players for tonight’s Class 4 regional playoff game against Branson. Although their identities haven’t been confirmed, it’s considered to be three key players.

The News-Leader’s Michael Stacy has as much information as the Cardinals would let out here on his blog. What does this mean for the undefeated and defending champion Webb City? That is yet to be seen, but for what it’s worth, the Cardinals beat Branson 49-7 earlier this season and knocked off the Pirates twice last season, including this same regional round.

Still, it depends on who the players are and how severe the suspensions are.

If you’re curious about the rest of tonight’s schedule, click here. Be sure to check back later tonight with scores and in the morning for a feast of game story links.
