Don’t forget, RecSpecsOnline.com is turning into TagSGF.com

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Tag.Magazine.logoIf you’ve been wondering where all of the traditional RecSpecs commentary has been, it’s all at TagSGF.com right now.

If you missed the announcement last week, RecSpecsOnline.com is joining forces with TheFourFour.com (the pre-eminent local music blog) and S.A.U.C.E the Mag (the most fun you’ve had in SGF, guaranteed.) to give SGFers a new voice and way to look at ways to have fun. This site will cease to exist as of Jan. 4.

If you’re at the Blue and Gold, it’s likely you’ve seen our booth, but if not, stop by. We’re right by the main entrance.

Blue Division preview — Captain Obvious thinks this one is easy

Thursday, December 24th, 2009
When you see Seth Davis on TV, understand he's going to tell you the most obvious thing possible. Yes, even stuff your sports-hating grandma could point out.

When you see Seth Davis on TV, understand he's going to tell you the most obvious thing possible. Yes, even stuff your sports-hating grandma could point out.

When talking about the Blue Division of the Blue and Gold Tournament, which begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Hammons Student Center, some people I’ve spoken to said I could write a preview in five words:

Nixa Eagles, Blue Division champions

Wow, what a leap of faith, crowning the top-seeded Eagles as the champions. Even Captain Obvious thinks that’s apparent. (FYI, Sports Illustrated’s Seth Davis is the modern-day Captain Obvious. God, he sucks. Badly. It’s unfortunate CBS has him as their primary in-studio March Madness analyst.)

Even to Davis’ or anyone else who would handicap Nixa as the favorite, the Eagles (9-0) are the easy choice. They have the three tangible measurements the truly good high school teams need:

MSU’s reputation in St. Louis might be changing

Saturday, December 19th, 2009
When the big man was hired for the SLU job, I thought that was going to be the end of STL recruits for MSU. Not the case, at all.

When the big man was hired for the SLU job, I thought that was going to be the end of STL recruits for MSU. Not the case, at all.

I remember saying this exact phrase out loud when Saint Louis University coach Rick Majerus was hired back in 2007.

“There is no way Missouri State will ever pull an impact player out of the St. Louis area again. It’s not going to happen.”

No way. Southern Illinois was, and is, still pulling the top Missouri Valley-level recruits and new Mizzou coach Mike Anderson was making statements about how he didn’t want the state’s top talent leaving the borders. Add in someone with Majerus’ national pedigree, and that meant MSU would have to settle for fourth-tier guys (with Barry Hinson, of course).

Do you think these girls would hang out at Ray's? (Yes, that was from some lingerie show at Icon.)

Do you think these girls would hang out at Ray's? (Yes, that was from some lingerie show at Icon.)

And who knows if that thinking extended to the entire state. If so, that’s like saying  you wanted to pick up a hot, young coed from Icon, but had to settle for a last call hook up from the talent at Ray’s Lounge. (Or a Commercial Street pro.)

I even remember thinking that St. Louis was a lost cause and how Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa and Arkansas might need to be panned as recruiting bases. But then, MSU hired Cuonzo Martin, an East St. Louis, Ill. native. I was still skeptical, and while I’m not praising current freshmen Keith Pickens and Jerome Jones as the next greatest MSU players, both look legit. Better than I ever imagined, assuming they were table scraps from SIU-SLU-Mizzou meals.

Needless to say, I’m shocked. Fast forward to the Bears’ 9-0 start and huge game at Saint Louis U today. It got me thinking about MSU’s perception in STL. Obviously, I don’t live in St. Louis or listen to STL talk radio, so I figured I’d go straight to Pickens and Jones and ask them about MSU’s STL perception.

Brace yourselves.

So, ta-da, welcome to Twitter Saturday.

Here is my first tweet, for a sample of what you’re going to get.:

• The Pitt-Cincy game reminds me of why the spread O is so annoying and why Cassville won another state title. Is this a blowout in waiting?

High school boys’ basketball preview

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

I’m not going to get into some longwinded, sobbing tale of how I miss last year’s boys’ basketball teams and seniors, but let’s be honest. Last year was spectacular.

We saw Central and Hillcrest emerge as powerhouses, along with Branson and we saw the maturation of stars like Tate Unruh, Mike Wiebe, Johnny Gray and Alex Hall. We saw Central win a district championship and Branson nearly make the final four.

The beauty of this year? Much of what we came to expect has vanished. It’s time to wipe the slate clean.

(Go ahead. Wipe it. Clean.)

Instead, it’s a time to learn some names — including who transferred where — what teams are contenders, pretenders and forgettables. And it’s time to meet a new star.

What to like and dislike about Lady Bears/SLU

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Everyone, you can take your finger off the panic button. At least for the time being.missouri.state.logo

After watching the Lady Bears/Saint Louis game on Mediacom last night, I’m feeling slightly better about the LB’s chances. And on cue, just like with my breakdown of the men earlier in the week, let’s dive in some likes and dislikes from Wednesday’s 75-59 home victory.
