I need to have time to breathe and not hyperventilate over some of these moves, but a host of former Springfield Cardinals were added to the St. Louis 40-man roster today, protecting them from being taken in next month’s Rule V draft.
Here is who was added:

Could Allen Craig make the big-league roster next season? All he's done is hit at every level.
Name, pos., last team
• Allen Craig, 3B/OF, Memphis
• Adam Ottavino, P, Memphis
• Jon Jay, OF, Memphis
• Darryl Jones, OF, Springfield
• Brian Anderson, C, Memphis
• Mark Hamilton, 1B, Memphis
• Francisco Samuel, P, Springfield
• Tyler Norrick, P, Springfield
This leaves the Cardinals with 34 spots on the 40-man roster filled, leaving six for free agency, trades, etc. I’ll have some more reaction to this tomorrow, but right now, I’m having a hard time believing that Mark Hamilton is more valuable than someone like Trey Hearne. Also, oft-injured pitcher Mark McCormick was left unprotected.
It’s also noteworthy that Matt Scherer has been removed from the 40-man. Scherer, a former S-Card was protected at this time last year, instead of Luis Perdomo, who was then taken in the Rule V by San Francisco and landed on San Diego’s roster.
