Fair Grove's Caleb Schaffitzel orally commits to play for Missouri State.

It’s official: Caleb Schaffitzel is going to play football at Missouri State.

According to the News-Leader and Fair Grove coach Jason O’Neal, Missouri’s all-time leading touchdown leader and all-time leading scorer has chosen to play for the Bears and will exclusively play defense.

Of course, RecSpecsOnline.com has been following Schaffitzel all season long, counting down to his breaking Missouri’s career TD mark. You can check out the final Caleb Schaffitzel Watch here.

Other local players that committed along with Schaffitzel were Hillcrest QB Mitchell Jenkins and Lebanon RB Josh Mattes.

All four players can make their decisions official during the signing period, which begins on Feb. 3.

Caleb Schaffitzel is the highest scoring player in Missouri high school football history.

Most careers and seasons end with a thud, unless you win a state championship. Fair Grove tailback Caleb Schaffitzel’s season ended back on Nov. 14 with a 42-14 Class 2 quarterfinal loss to Lamar.

What it did do was allow us to officially tally his eyepopping career numbers and officially cement his legacy amongst the state’s best football players of all time.

What records does he hold? Schaffitzel is currently the state’s all-time touchdown leader with 141 and points leader with 921. He’s second in career rushing yards, second and third in most TDs in a season and fourth in rushing TDs in a season. I’ve spelled out all of his numbers in the remainder of this post.

Also, I sat down with Schaffitzel for a question-and-answer session, asking him about what it’s like to break the state’s most hallowed record, what his college plans are and what made him such a good tailback.

Well, Caleb Schaffitzel did it. And he treated Pleasant Hope just like he did the rest of the teams from the 2009 regular season.

As expected, the Fair Grove High School tailback broke Brad Hocker’s state career touchdown record by scoring a first quarter touchdown just 1 minute, 29 seconds into the game. He tacked on three more throughout the rest of the game — one on a punt return — to now hold the record outright and push it to 133 career touchdowns. News-Leader freelancer and homie Don Abernathy captured the moment here.

Schaffitzel tied Hocker with five touchdowns in a come-from-behind victory over Strafford last week. For more, click the link below.

The Caleb Schaffitzel Watch — Week 9

Caleb Schaffitzel has his sights set on breaking Missouri's most hallowed HS football record.
Caleb Schaffitzel has a chance to break Missouri’s high school career touchdown mark Thursday at Pleasant Hope.

Friday night was quite a birthday present for Caleb Schaffitzel.

With five rushing touchdowns in a dramatic 38-30 come-from-behind district victory at Strafford, the Fair Grove High School senior tailback tied Brad Hocker’s state record for TDs in a career with 129. On his 18th birthday, Schaffitzel ripped off 300 yards on 22 carries, including TD runs of 7, 10, 24, 30, and 82.

With one more TD in Thursday night’s game at Pleasant Hope, Schaffitzel will wrest the record away from Archie’s Hocker and might put it where no one else will ever touch it. As of right now, he has 129 and with the Eagles locked in to the playoffs with a 9-0 record — 2-0 in the district — Fair Grove will have at least two more games, if not more.

But let’s not jinx him, let’s just enjoy the season he is having — 37 TDs and counting.

Things are starting to get eery with Caleb Schaffitzel’s chase for Missouri’s high school career touchdown record.

After tallying three more in a 34-0 stomping of Stockton, the four-year starter at tailback for Fair Grove is 18 touchdowns away from tying Archie’s Brad Hocker. Why is that eery? Halfway through the regular season, he’s scored (wait for it) 18 TDs.

As we try to have the most thorough Schaffitzel watch in the country, here is where the Fair Grove HS senior stands:
